In structural engineering applications, System Identification algorithms are used to calculate the characteristic dynamic properties of structures using accelerometer data. Dynamic properties of structures; natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes are essential for Structural Health Monitoring. These parameters are used to determine the presence of possible damage to the structures in further analyses.
Dynamic behavior of the structures is required to determine the resistance of structures against external hazards such as earthquakes. When the time constraint is not allowing to construct a finite element model, or in cases where the architectural drawings and details of the structure have large uncertainties; structural health monitoring software enables the structural dynamic properties to be obtained by using only accelerometer data without the need of a finite element model.
